ANA shares a petition from Washington State Nurses Association

Posted almost 5 years ago

For New Hampshire Nurses Association members that are not aware, Washington State Senator Maureen Walsh remarked that nurses in small, rural hospitals “probably play cards for a considerable amount of the day,” while voicing her opposition to Washington SHB 11155, a bill "which would provide nurses with uninterrupted meal and rest breaks. Walsh argued for an amendment to the bill that would exclude small, rural hospitals from the requirement."  These comments created a firestorm on social media last week and over the weekend.  Senator Walsh has gone on to apologize per an article in the Huffington Post, which also notes the Senator Walsh's mother was an RN (that is just so sad).

But as Janet Haebler, Senior Associate Director, ANA Policy & State Government Affairs, says:  the best to engage following the disrespect for nurses displayed by Washington State Senator Walsh is to unite and help pass the bill to secure uninterrupted rest breaks and address a loop hole in mandatory overtime prohibition. #Nurses deserve safe work environments.

Washington State Nurses Association has asked we show support by signing the petition. Help Washington State Nurses & Hospital Techs!
